A&E OCTOBER 2016 • 21 Laser Engraving Not only did we obtain a rather con- vincing brushed appearance by using laser technology, but we saved a considerable amount of time. If you combine the four minutes it took to laser mark each piece along with the 20 seconds it took to sand- carve, it is easy to see the benefits of using a laser for this application. On a similar note, you can obtain some interesting background effects using a CO 2 laser. You just have to ensure that a laser-friendly plastic or metal is utilized. These decorative effects can be completed in either a vector or raster mode. Or you may even experiment with a combination of both methods. Regardless on how you view your laser and its work, it does not always have to be the focal point of all your creative projects. In this project, the laser marked graphics were not the focal point of this custom award. Instead, they served more of a supportive role and saved us consider- able time and aggravation. By using the laser for some unconventional purposes, you may just be doing what that famous Motown artist Martha and The Vandellas sang about. Simply put, you just may find yourself, "Dancing In The Street." Richard Korbyl manages the family business, Columbia Awards, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
