6 a-e-mag.com • A&E OCTOBER 2016 T here are all sorts of collectors in the world: rock col- lectors, stamp enthusiasts, and clock lovers to name a few. I would bet the vast majority of the popula- tion has a collection of one sort or another, admittedly or not. We all have something we're passionate about and find attractive, and it's fun to pay homage to the things we love. I had the privilege of talking with Elli Chemel of A.T. Designs a while back, and the conversation turned to the topic of runners. We weren't discussing just anyone—the focus was on marathoners, Ironman competitors, and other elite distance runners. He brought up an interesting point that these athletes are often collectors. Not only do they col- lect miles (metaphorically speaking), but they also tend to be awards collectors. If you've ever seen the different award styles that these kinds of races give out to the finishers, they're quite impressive. Whether in the form of a medal or trophy, they are often customized to such an extent that it makes anyone, runner or otherwise, want one. Chemel pointed out the fact that many of these distance athletes specifi- cally participate in certain races because they want to collect these unique awards. I can personally attest to this award-collecting desire. As a runner, I won't sign up for a race unless I've scoped out the finisher award status: will it be a medal or a trophy? Will all finishers get one or just those who place in the top of their age groups? Or will there be a finisher award at all? It sounds silly, but a lot of times I will sign up for a race simply because the finisher award would look pretty cool on my shelf. These days, the spotlight on awards is sometimes less than bright. Many people are casting participation awards in particular in a negative light. Others say that awards and trophies in general are just junk that collect dust in some attic. But I couldn't disagree with those statements more. As an awards collector, I see the value of these items more than ever. Awards in general (not just those that runners get at the end of the race) rein- force that feeling of accomplishment. They remind the recipient of their hard work and dedication. Displaying an award garners a sense of pride. And for those who are awards collectors, they represent long-standing dedication. Beyond the collector, an award plays an important role in the everyday life of many people, young and old. The second grader who receives a ribbon for winning the Spelling Bee will proudly hang that ribbon on his wall. It will instill in him that hard work pays off. And later in life, he might even decide to become a novelist. Even if he doesn't collect awards throughout his life, that one ribbon will remain a small reminder of what he's capable of. Some people collect shoes, some collect sea shells; some even go so far as to col- lect cars. And then there are those who collect awards. But it's not just about putting a trinket in a display case. It's about celebrating what we're passionate about and searching for that next thing that makes us feel good. Until next time. WANT TO KNOW MORE?
