22 • A&E NOVEMBER 2016 T o quote a phrase from a popular book-turned-TV series: "Winter is coming." (Credit: Game of Thrones.) At this time of year, many loca- tions throughout the country have already experienced the first snowfall. On the sports side, fall sports are wrapping up across all levels and ages and winter sports are ramping up for their respective seasons. High school hockey teams, middle school basketball players, and wrestling coaches will all soon be on the lookout for various awards. Not only do they need end-of-the-year awards for both indi- viduals and teams, but throughout the season, parents will want gear that sup- ports their team and players will want per- sonalized bags; what better way to supple- ment the awards sale than to offer photo buttons, lanyards, bag tags and more. The winter sports season is coming—it's time to get ready. THE ROSTER You might go right to ice hockey and snowboarding when you think winter sports season, but the reality is that this season plays host to many different sports. Often, the region, school system, and var- ious age groups will dictate what sports are played during the winter. According to Cathy Garcia, Marco Awards Group, basketball and wrestling are a few of the sports played throughout the winter months. "Basketball fits into the youth sports program," she adds, calling into picture the fact that certain age groups play this sport when temps cool off. These aren't the only two sports played in the dark of winter. "The new year brings on many 'true' winter sports such as ice skating and skiing," says Gregory Kolenut, Freeman-CMA, noting that the time of year can play a role in the sports season. To that list, he adds snowboarding along with unique sports such as curling, which got its start in a different region outside the U.S. "Curling is a unique winter sport popular in Canada and growing in the USA," he adds. Score big in the winter sports season Winter Sports are Coming By Cassie Green Tournaments and club teams will purchase higher end trophies and awards as well as a higher quantity.
