64 • A&E AUGUST 2017 apple to find the best position within the apple that looked most authentic. I could also change the apple color and/or the highlight color until the combination looked just right. (fig 7a, 7b) To give it further dimension, I decided to create a shadow underneath the apple. First I created the outer shape of the shadow and then the inner shape repre- senting the darkest part of the shadow. I assigned no stroke to the outer shape and filled it with white, and on the inner shape, also no stroke and filled it with dark gray. Again, I selected both shapes and chose the Interactive Blend tool. As above, a gradation occurred from the darker center of the shadow blending out to white, the color of the background, making the shadow appear authentic.
