48 a-e-mag.com • A&E APRIL 2018 Don't get me wrong — we all need great products that sell year after year, and that are easy to produce time after time. But, some- times we as business people should challenge ourselves to get outside the box, and a lot of times our customers appreciate the product that came from outside the box. It will add a special and unique flair to the transaction, and will challenge you as an artisan rather than just as a production person. Lucky for us, the sublimation market is fast paced and changes almost daily. New products enter the market, and using cross technologies, we can produce custom pieces rather than off-the-shelf pieces. Believe us, your customers will appreciate a chance to live outside the box. WHAT IS THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX? The Cambridge Dictionary hits the definition right on the head: "To think imaginatively using new ideas instead of traditional or expected ideas." There are new products available to put a different spin on an existing product line. Slate falls into the category of using a product for something that is not expected. There are also ways to sublimate products that are not coated for sublimation or for light or dark cotton fabrics. Sublidecal, Subliflock, and Sublicloth fall into that category of imagi- natively incorporating new ideas. Unisub hardboard is another underutilized product that can be laser cut into shapes and then sublimated for a large variety of unique products and across technologies. A s business people, sometimes we get confined inside the box. We do the same products the same way each and every day that we go into the shop. It can almost feel rote. Customers ask for product A that we have always made. We produce product A without even thinking, hand it to the customer, the customer pays us, and we move on to another order for product A.
