60 THE SHOP JUNE 2018 MADE TO MOVE The challenge isn't just what to build but, more importantly, what will sell, and quick! Extracting new vehicles from a dealership's inventory that won't be ready for sale over the next 60 to 90-plus days is a lot like robbing a bank but leaving a note saying, "I will bring it all back in three months, with interest!" Inventory turn is always on a dealer's mind, so the reward must outweigh the risk. This becomes top-of-mind when designing a concept that must appeal to the masses. Paying attention to dealers' inventory and having a finger on the pulse of what is turning and what isn't and why plays a big part in assessing what will be appealing at a Custom Garage display. If a certain trim level of a Jeep Wrangler like the Rubicon is selling great, what is the attraction within that model that is so appealing? How do we incorporate those features in a package design on the Wrangler Sport model? With a strong 4x4/truck market, sus- pension systems have been a solid choice to display at a car show. Lifted trucks not only add elevated curb appeal, but provide advantages such as improved off-road capa- bilities. Although a majority of new truck owners may choose to spend most of their time on the road, knowing the option is open to venture off-road is rather enticing. Front-end leveling kits have become pop- ular on several new vehicle models such as the Subaru Outback and Crosstrek, along with the Jeep Cherokee. Fitting a slightly larger and more aggressive tire under these vehicles creates a certain excitement in owning a mid-sized SUV. A NOD TO THE PAST A different twist from previous shows was introduced this year and was a big hit—the retro look of a 1970s vintage Chevrolet Cheyenne Super 10 was built onto a pair of 2018 Silverados. The reaction to these two trucks was overwhelming. Consumers of all ages were drawn to the curb appeal they created: vintage styling with all the latest technology. You don't have to be a baby boomer to appreciate that. The utilization of props at a car show helps trigger the imagination of how these vehicles will fit into a consumer's lifestyle. Rooftop baskets filled with camping gear and coolers show the ability to conserve valuable space within the vehicle. Displaying lifted trucks on large boulders shows the value in added ground clearance and highlights the suspension modifica- tions and aggressive tires associated with lifted trucks. LED lights mounted from rooftops to underbody suspension lighting The retro look of a mid-'70s Chevrolet Chey- enne Super 10 was a big hit on this 2018 Silverado at the Twin Cit- ies Auto Show. The pickup has all of today's technol- ogy with the classic look of an older generation. The new Jeep Wrangler JL hit the street just 30 days before the show.
