Mobile automotive services are certainly nothing new. Many aftermarket shops already offer basic accessory installations onsite for car dealership customers. Certain reconditioning jobs are routinely performed at homes or offices. My son even hired a graphics tech to install vinyl stripes on his GTO in our driveway. And now GoWrench, a Canadian-based mobile automo- tive maintenance service, recently announced it had raised $525,000 Canadian (approximately $409,000 U.S.) to scale- up operations and development of its B2B and consumer platform, which sends mechanics to customers' homes or places of business to perform routine diagnostics and repairs. "GoWrench is shaking up the auto maintenance industry and this (funding) raise is a testament to how many people support our vision and crave a change in this space," said Josh Lombardo-Bottema, CEO and founder of GoWrench. "What started out as a spur-of-the-moment idea when my vehicle broke down has resulted in saving people time. With this funding, we're incredibly excited to get the opportunity to offer our service to more consumers across Canada." Based in Hamilton, Ontario, GoWrench services are currently available in more than 45 cities across Canada‚ÄĒpredominantly in Ontario and British Columbia. Customers request the service they need online and, after receiving a quote, can proceed with booking an appointment time for mechanics to complete the job. "We back true grit entrepreneurs who are passionate, visionary and determined," said Marat Mukhamedyarov, managing partner, Good News Ventures, a GoWrench investor. "Josh has such qualities and we are excited to be on board with him to disrupt the automotive industry." Founded in 2015, it remains to be seen if the company's mobile mechanics business model has staying power. Still, the recent investments show that consumer interest seems to be there. A quick scan of the GoWrench website includes replacement and repair offerings of a variety of components, including lights, engine belts, brakes and more. It's not much of a leap to envision aftermarket orders for light bars, cat-back exhausts, running boards or other upgrades that could be easily installed remotely in a few hours. Like many aspects of any small business, mobile success or failure could hinge on the ability of service techs. GoWrench says it works with fully vetted, certified mechanics, allowing them autonomy when it comes to workflow and scheduling, and the chance to take on projects they are interested in.
